Critique of other Student Work

As Jordan Washington did not post a final piece, I am going to be reviewing Kayla Buchanan's final project (linked here). I have enjoyed all of Kayla's pieces. She is very good with gradients and this project is no different.

The first piece has a lovely metallic gradient which makes the Trylon really standout in front of the more basic spherical backdrop of the Perisphere. I do wonder about the curved text of "New York / 1939 / World's Fair" (kind of wondering if that was the best font based on the rest of the piece, but that is just my opinion).

The second piece does not seem as strong as the first. I like the illustration of the Trylon/Persiphere, but I struggle with the gradient because it feels like I really have to fight to read the text.

I think the third piece has a better gradient compared to the second (making me wonder what would happen if the softer gradient could be applied to the second or if it is the same and it is just the red back drop fighting with the gradient). I'm sorry this one does not have a contrasting central piece so it does not jump as much (it's blue on blue as apposed to the red on blue jump). I don't know the more I look at at the piece I think I don't want to change it).

The fourth piece has a strong composition. I really like the piece. I guess the piece is supposed to echo the nib of a calligraphy pen (not sure), but it looks cool. I like the subtle shadow that makes the composition really jump even more. Again, not sure about the curved text of "New York / 1939 / World's Fair", but here I like it more because it does not distract from the piece.

One Point I am confused about is the title of the project "Final Projet: 1939 New York World's Fair Bookmarks". That would suggest these are bookmarks, but they are the wrong shape for bookmarks. They seem like posters (the second and third posters could stamps given their shape). Bookmarks are longer in width and thiner length to put in books, so I am confused how these would be appropriate bookmarks. This would be my biggest issue with these pieces.

Overall, I liked the pieces.
